High School Love Pt 1

When you start high school, your parents want you to focus on getting good grades and preparing for your future. But as a teenager, your priorities don't always match theirs. You want to spend time with your friends, make memories, and maybe even experience your first love.

For me, school came first. I stayed focused on my studies and worked part-time. What teenager doesn't love having their own money? I enjoyed the independence and had my future mapped out—or at least I thought I did.

That all changed during my junior year.

I was working at a local gas station when he walked in.

The first thing I noticed was the car he was driving. Then I looked up. He was tall, handsome, and had the most incredible smile. It wasn't just a smile—it was mysterious, almost as if he knew something no one else did. It had this playful look that made you wonder what he was thinking.

Little did I know... he was definitely up to something.

Instead of walking straight over to me, he did something I wasn't expecting. He went to my boss first and politely asked if it would be okay to talk to me and ask for my phone number.

I remember thinking, What a gentleman.

In a world where most teenage boys were loud, awkward, or trying too hard, his confidence was quiet. He was respectful, patient, and different. That simple gesture told me more about his character than any pickup line ever could.

Looking back now, I had no idea that one small conversation in a gas station would become the beginning of a story that would change the course of my life forever.

That small conversation at the gas station led to us exchanging phone numbers. As I watched him walk away, I remember thinking, He's never going to call. In my mind, he was way out of my league.

We didn't even go to the same high school, so I convinced myself there was no way this could ever turn into anything. It felt like one of those moments that would simply become a nice memory.

I couldn't have been more wrong.

What I didn't know then was that the next two years of my life would become intertwined with his. He called, just like he said he would, and after a little hesitation, I agreed to go on a date with him.

Then came the day he picked me up.

The moment I saw his car pull into my driveway, panic set in. I suddenly became self-conscious. My house didn't compare to his world, and I felt embarrassed. I wanted to pretend I wasn't home. I wanted to back out before he ever walked to the door.

But it was too late.

He was already there.

There was one thing I quickly learned.

The car I'd seen him driving the day we met at the gas station wasn't his.

When he pulled into my driveway for our first date, I honestly didn't recognize him at first. Instead of the nice car I'd remembered, he showed up in what I could only describe as a giant 1970s Ford LTD—a complete rust bucket.

My sisters immediately started laughing.

"Who is that? What is he driving?" they teased.

I just stood there in disbelief.

This was the car he was taking me on our first date in?

The paint was practically nonexistent. Rust had claimed most of the body, and there were even holes in the floorboard. The air conditioner didn't work—which normally wouldn't have been a deal breaker—but no one had warned me.

I had spent time getting ready. My long hair was down, and I thought I looked pretty good.

The moment we pulled away from my house, every strand of my hair had a mind of its own. The windows were down because they had to be, and the hot summer air whipped my hair across my face the entire drive. I spent more time trying to see where we were going than enjoying the ride.

Looking back now, it's funny how quickly my expectations disappeared. The fancy car that first caught my attention didn't matter anymore. What mattered was that he had shown up, smiling the same mysterious smile that had caught my attention in the first place.

And somehow, that old rust bucket became the vehicle that carried us into the beginning of our story.
