With those walls firmly in place, I unknowingly became part of the downfall of our relationship. I was so focused on protecting my heart that I stopped letting him see it.
Eventually, we became strangers.
It's amazing how quickly life can change. One day we were talking about spending forever together. He had even asked me to marry him and leave with him the day I graduated. At the time, that future felt so certain.
Then... there was silence.
No phone calls.
No letters.
No "I love you."
Just silence.
But silence doesn't mean someone disappears from your heart.
Not a single day went by that I didn't think about him. I wondered where he was, if he was happy, and if he ever thought about me. I often caught myself asking the same question over and over:
What would my life have looked like if we had found a way to make it through?
Would we have built the life we dreamed about as teenagers? Would we have grown together instead of apart? Or were we simply too young to understand that love alone isn't always enough?
Life has a way of taking us down roads we never expected. Sometimes those roads lead us away from the people we thought we'd never lose.
But what I didn't know then was that our story wasn't over.
Life wasn't finished writing our chapters.
Sometimes the people who leave the biggest mark on your heart aren't meant to stay in one season of your life. Sometimes they return when both of you have grown into the people you were always meant to become.
And although I didn't know when—or even if—our paths would cross again, a small part of me never stopped hoping they would.
After our breakup, life moved on—or at least it looked like it had.
What surprised me most was learning that my parents had never really lost touch with him. They remained friends. He would call to check on them, and every now and then he'd stop by their house just to visit.
When I found that out, I secretly held onto a hope I rarely admitted out loud.
Maybe one day I'd be there when he came by.
Maybe we'd see each other again.
Maybe all the feelings we'd once shared would somehow find their way back.
It was a foolish hope... or so I told myself.
Then life gave me the chance I'd been quietly wishing for.
By then, I had moved into a house on my parents' land, just next door. He had no idea I lived there.
I still remember the day he showed up.
I heard the unmistakable rumble of a Harley-Davidson long before I saw him. That sound carried something familiar with it—a flood of memories I thought I'd tucked away years before.
Then he came riding up the hill toward my parents' driveway.
Maybe time has a way of romanticizing our memories, but in my mind, it looked like something straight out of a romance novel. The sun seemed to catch him just right as he rolled in, excited to show my parents his new motorcycle.
And there he was.
After all those years.
Older.
Different.
Yet somehow... exactly the same.
My heart recognized him before my mind had time to catch up.
That day, he met my children for the first time.
They were still little, full of curiosity and endless energy. Watching the man I had once imagined building a life with kneel down to introduce himself to my kids stirred emotions I wasn't prepared for.
It was bittersweet.
As I watched him laugh with them, I couldn't help but wonder what life might have looked like if our story had unfolded differently. Some dreams never completely disappear—they simply become quiet enough that you almost forget they're still there.
Seeing him again reminded me that mine had never truly gone away.
